My friend Damon Di Giorgio, superintendent at Roco Ki Resort in the Punta Cana region of the Dominican Republic, is living the dream.
In early 2005 he got a phone call. It was from Weitz Golf. They wanted him on a project in the D.R. right away – like, two weeks from that day.
He was living in San Francisco at the time. His couch, dining room table, TV, entertainment center – he gave it all away to friends. With a suitcase full of work clothes, he headed to this Caribbean paradise.
“DD” arrived in the D.R. as the project superintendent of Roco Ki, a Nick Faldo design that wraps along gorgeous coastline. Damon now lives 93 steps from the beach. Yes, he counted. And to add to the good news, as the project neared completion, he was hired as head superintendent. So his home is the Dominican Republic now.
Oh, the supermodel line? Well, that’s the best part. While filming an advertisement for Roco Ki Resort, they decided they needed actors to portray a happy, beautiful couple loving life at the resort. So they contacted an agency and hired a female model to run along the beaches in her bathing suit. And the next call they made? To superintendent Damon Di Giorgio –- he was needed as the male model.
Damon agreed, of course. What guy doesn’t want to be in a TV commercial frolicking with a bikini babe? In his own words:
“It was tough work having to be with the model all day. There were HOURS of scenes shot not shown in the commercial. Like me picking her up and running into the ocean. Or running on the beach with her without my shirt on.”
(If you'd like to see the commercial, email me and I'll see if I can email it to you.)
