GCM has received confirmation from sources within the USGA that the position of director of championship agronomy, most recently held by 21-year USGA employee Tim Moraghan, has been eliminated and that Moraghan will leave the USGA at the end of the month.
The memo, from USGA Executive Director David Fay and dated June 28th, is brief and thanks Moraghan for his many years of service and wishes him well in his future endeavors. Moraghan had been with the USGA since 1985.
The memo further explains that in the future, USGA Green Section Regional Agronomists will now be the agronomy liaisons for USGA Championship events (Open, Women's Open, Senior Open). Regional Agronomsists have always monitored turf conditions for amateur events, so with Moraghan's departure, those regional agronomists will now be monitoring the majors as well.
GCM likewise has confirmed with a source close to the USGA that Green Section regional agronomists have already made at least one visit to a future USGA championship site.
No official press release has yet been issued by the USGA. The USGA has declined GCM's request to make an official statement. Efforts to reach Moraghan by GCM have remained unsuccessful.
