Saving the environment just got a whole lot easier at GCSAA headquarters. A new dumpster in our parking lot, courtesy of Deffenbaugh Inc., will hold all the recyclable material collected at headquarters until that material is hauled away for processing. This may not seem like a big deal, but that dumpster represents savings of time and labor and a monthly cash donation to Wakarusa Valley Elementary School.
Now the backstory. At GCSAA headquarters, we are committed to being environmentally friendly. Although this is the right thing to do, it's not always the easy thing. Recycling, in particular, is not easy in Lawrence, Kan. For individuals and businesses, it has almost always involved a lot of time-consuming sorting. For example, until recently, the local Wal-Mart, where many people take their recycling, had 10 different categories of recyclable material. It now has nine. Sorting material for a building that houses more than 100 employees is very labor-intensive, and the whole process came to a halt recently when the company that used to pick up our recyclables abruptly stopped servicing businesses.
For GCSAA, recycling has changed! This week, Bob Kidder, GCSAA's housekeeping/facilities coordinator, sent out an email announcing the changes. No longer do we have to sort all of our recycling. We have only threecategories -- aluminum, cardboard and "other." Other includes white and color paper, plastic (rinsed) bottles, catalogs, magazines, phone books, brochures, junk mail, drink (rinsed) cartons, and chipboard.
So, while our previous recycling company left us high and dry, we've now got this Deffenbaugh dumpster that makes recycling not only easier, but profitable for our partners at WakarusaValley Elementary School. How's that for a win-win?
