We received some sad news in the GCSAA offices yesterday about the recent passing of Mike Daly, a veteran of more than 20 years in the golf course management industry, following a lengthy bout with brain cancer. He was 52.
Most recently, Daly served as the director of marketing for Bayer Environmental Science, but he had a long career in the industry, beginning with a stint as an assistant superintendent and continuing through a number of industry leading chemical companies, including Ciba, Novartis and, finally, Bayer. Daly tasks largely focused on the area's of sales and marketing during those stints.
"Mike was a thinker. He saw things from a different point of view. You could always count on Mike to bring fresh ideas and unique solutions," said Neil Cleveland, the director of the U.S. green business for Bayer and a long-time friend. "Most importantly, Mike had a big heart and was always optimistic. He brought a fun-loving attitude to everyone and everything he touched. It will be especially difficult not hearing Mike's laugh. It was so recognizable and contagious."
Daly was someone that many of us at GCM knew from the times that our paths would cross at various industry events, from the Golf Industry Show to annual meetings of the Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association. On behalf of all of us at GCM and GCSAA, our condolences go out to his family and friends.
