I don't want to give away too much of the story we're working on for the Front 9 news section of our November issue, but English has long had a personal interest in the animals and was intrigued by the possibility of training them to act as caddies on golf courses. They're serene, easy to train, do almost no damage to golf course turf (if they're kept off greens, of course) — perfect, the Class A member and owner of Smoky Mountain Greenskeepers figured.
Long story short, at least for the purposes of this post, English approached the folks at Sherwood Forest GC near Cedar Mountain, N.C., about using the llama caddies, and they agreed. The results have been nothing short of staggering — great member acceptance, new player traffic from golfers interested in taking a loop with the animals and plenty of media attention, including this video from MSNBC as well as stories in everything from the local press to the BBC (and, coming soon, GCM!). And recently, another local course, the Maggie Valley Club, approached English about bringing the animals to their facility.
