It's been awhile since we added anyone to our coveted (OK, maybe not) list of superintendent bloggers we've been compiling on the blog, but this story from the Newark Star-Ledger inspired me to finally right that wrong this Friday afternoon.
First, about the story: It featured a quartet of New Jersey superintendents and GCSAA members — Frank Tichenor at Forest Hill Field Club, Todd Raisch from Ridgewood CC, Tyler Otero from Trump National-Colts Neck and Jamie Devers from Canoe Brook CC — and described how they dove into the world of social media as a means of communicating with members and avid golfers about golf course conditioning and special projects on the course.
All four have active Twitter accounts — @FHFCGREENS for Tichenor, @RCC_Grounds for Raisch, @TrumpCNGrounds for Otero and @CBCC_Grounds for Devers. TIchenor also has a regularly updated blog (the link above will get you there). As far as I can tell, no blogs for the others, although I'm willing and ready to be corrected about this.
It was a gratifying story to read from a mainstream media source, especially considering I co-presented on this very topic with this very message during the Golf Industry Show in San Diego (and will do so again next year in Orlando). I remain a firm believer in social media for superintendents as a way to inform and educate golfers about what they do and what is happening on the golf course, so I'm glad this foursome from Jersey got a little recognition for doing just that.
So, without further ado, here are three other new additions to our list of super bloggers:
- Paul Sabino, The Farms CC, Wallingford, Conn. An extremely active and detailed blog that in recent posts has covered topics such as annual bluegrass weevil outbreaks and photo IDs of turfgrass diseases. We found Paul's blog after he left a comment on one of our recent posts at the GCM blog.
- Nathan Peters, Burl Oaks CC, Mound, Minn. Yet another blog for a course in Minnesota; it's like its state law or something. Nathan is the assistant superintendent at Burl Oaks and also has a regularly updated Twitter account, @BURLOAKSGCTURF.
- Edina (Minn.) CC Restoration. What did I tell you about Minnesota? This one is a little more specific as assistant superintendent Brandon Schindele has been updating folks on a full course renovation that is taking place at Edina CC this summer under the direction of Tom Lehman.
Thanks for the lists of supper bloggers.
