It's a pretty safe bet that, agronomically speaking, the summer of 2010 will go down as one of the most trying three months in many superintendents' careers.
You probably know the story by now — extreme heat and humidity, interrupted only by periods of heavy rain, combined to batter golf courses from the Northeast into Central Florida and all across the Midwest. Superintendents employed emergency maintenance practices just to keep grass growing. In some cases, courses temporarily closed as a last-ditch effort to save turfgrass.
As I detailed in the Inside GCM column I authored for our September issue (an issue that we just put to bed earlier today ... YES!), there was no shortage of assistance available for superintendents battling these tough conditions. And earlier in the week, I got notice of another industry partner ready to help out.
Tee-2-Green, a leading provider of bentgrass varieties for golf, announced a discount program — 50 cents a pound — on all of its creeping bentgrass varieties, running through Oct. 15. And they cited the dire circumstances facing many golf courses in making the announcement.
"It's no surprise that superintendents are faced with reduced budgets, so the wave of extreme weather experienced throughout much of the country is posing yet another challenge for them to deal with," said Bill Rose, the president of Tee-2-Green. "Since damaged turf will need to be repaired, we decided to do our part to help ease the financial burden by temporarily reducing the cost of our bentgrass varieties."
Tee-2-Green distributors will be offering the discount. More information can be obtained by calling 800-547-0255 or by visiting www.tee-2-green.com. Superintendents can also contact Lew Sharp, a golf course consultant for Tee-2-Green, at 785-834-2866 for assistance.
