Couple quick notes from the maintenance facility here at Whistling Straits:
- Word spread on the golf course that a major thunderstorm was 90 minutes away. And it was. But the tournament and the crew seems to have caught a break -- the storm seems to have broken up west of here. "We would be seeing it by now," Lee said.
- The next bullet aimed at the tourney is a 90% chance of a storm at 7 p.m. They're keeping their fingers crossed that the storm takes a turn at what Irish Course superintendent Matt Zehms dubbed "the Haven split." Storms sometimes stay to one side of Haven, Wis., which is a tiny little village of maybe 15 houses across the street from Whistling Straits. Sometimes BlackWolf Run can be getting pelted with rain while Whistling Straits remains dry. They're hopeful the Haven split turns in their favor tonight.
- And of course another forecast for rain in the early hours of Saturday morning. The crew remains hopeful.
- If the players can play without a rain delay today, the PGA is confident they can get caught up on golf.
- Some of the staff has been busy changing cups with the first round wrapping up today.
- The GCSAA Board of Directors just made a visit to the maintenance facility to tell Mike Lee and his crew "great job!"
- I'm going to hop on a golf car and ride the course with Chris Zugel this afternoon, up until about 4 p.m. when I depart for the Milwaukee airport. But updates will continue throughout the weekend!
