I'm back to Florida after a whirlwind trip to Cancun and back.
I was surprised when I was invited by Nick Price to join him on his private jet on a trip to view his latest golf course design near Cancun... and even more surprised that I was able to pull it all off in three days.
Nick invited me to join last Thursday. I didn't say no, but said it was unlikely I could pull the trip off on such short notice. I then looked into it... sure enough, round-trip tickets to West Palm Beach were only $270 total... and I was all of a sudden booking a flight.
Like I told my wife tonight, I went from not believing this trip could happen, to wondering when would be the next time I'd be able to grab a beer and trade stories with Nick. Just such a cool, mellow, funny guy. If he's anything like this at the GIS in February when he accepts the OTM award, I guarantee he will slay the crowd. The guy has stories.
So, yeah. This has been an unusual week... and one of the most exciting of my professional career. I can't wait to write this story for you all to read in GCM.
One story I'll share quickly... and this might even make my December cover story, I don't know.
Nick was about to have this press conference. About 30, 40 Mexican journalists filled the room. Nick was standing and chatting with his shaper, Dean. A tall blonde woman, about 40, asked Nick if she could take his and Dean's photo. Nick obliged, and the two smiled for a photo.
She then asked Dean for his name. He gave it. She then turned to Nick and asked his name. "I'm Nick Price," he said.
"No, really..." she replied.
"Really. I'm Nick Price."
"C'mon," she said. "Nick Price isn't even here yet!"
"What is it?" Nick laughed. "Do I look that much younger in real life?!?"
The woman, seeing us all laughing, finally caved in and accepted that she accidentally photographed World Golf Hall of Famer Nick Price. She was blushing as she scurried away.
And those are the kinds of stories you can't get with phone interviews, folks.
The most pressing thing I want to know is...did he fix your swing?
