Many in our industry either know or know of Matt Hurley, the longtime vice president and general manager for golf course accessory company Standard Golf. He's been a fixture with the Cedar Falls, Iowa-based company and in golf course management circles for decades.
Unfortunately, we received the very sad news over the weekend that Matt suffered a brain aneurysm last week. Despite emergency surgery, the prognosis is not good and following family discussions with doctors at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, he was removed from a breathing tube this morning according to the last update on a Caring Bridge page started by the family.
I first met Matt six or seven years ago when the company invited members of the trade press to visit their facility in Cedar Falls and learn more about the company and their products. I played a round of golf with Matt during that trip, shared stories over a few drinks in the evenings and we chatted occasionally ever since. The last time I saw Matt was last year in San Diego at the Golf Industry Show, where we talked for 15 or 20 minutes. I was looking forward to catching up again this year in Orlando.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Hurley family and to his extended family at Standard Golf during this difficult time.
