The Final Four won't be the only major sporting event visiting Houston this week. The PGA Tour is making it's annual week-before-the-Masters stop in south Texas for the Shell Houston Open, and GCM has uncovered a couple of ways professionals in the golf course management industry can get an inside look at course maintenance operations at Redstone GC.
First off, official friend of GCM, Randy Samoff, the Class A superintendent at Redstone, has created his own blog focusing on the work he and his team perform not only during tournament week, but year round on the club's Tournament Course. You can check out all that went into preparations for this week, as well as updates as the week progresses, by clicking on this link.
In addition, Samoff worked with free-lance writer Art Stricklin last year on a story of GCM that detailed the maintenance practices they employ at Redstone to simulate some of the conditions players will encounter at Augusta National the week following the Shell. We posted that story, one we called "Sincere flattery," on our blog in two parts a year ago — this link will take you to the first part, while this link takes you to part two.
