As we move through Earth Day 2011, we've heard from several companies in the golf course management industry who are stepping up to help the cause.*
* Now, I'm pretty sure these aren't the only companies who do business with superintendents who are putting forth some special efforts around Earth Day. But these are the ones who let us know about it. If you're reading this and your firm has some Earth Day-related activity or promotion planned, go ahead and email me about it and I'll tack it on to this post as the day goes on.
Take Agrium Advanced Technologies, for example. They're partnering with the High Plains Environmental Center (HPEC) and the city of Loveland, Colo., today in an effort that serves in conjunction with the Professional Landcare Network's (PLANET) nationwide Day of Service. Agrium employees are volunteering to help plant 225 one-gallon container plants in the Plant Seed Demonstration Gardent at HPEC, then are running drip irrigation and mulching the plants with pea stone. In addition, Agrium is donating 750 pounds of its Spread It & Forget It Driven By Duration CR fertilizer product to the city of Loveland.
"At Agrium Advanced Technologies, it's important for both our employees and our organization as a whole to engage in initiatives that support, sustain and protect the environment," says Andrew Mittag, the president of the company. "Participating in activities on Earth Day and PLANET Day of Service is just one way we can show our support while helping improve green spaces in our own backyard."
Then there is PACE Turf out of San Diego, which has produced the poster that you see here for superintendents to print out and post on bulletin or activity boards at their golf facilities, or even post on websites and blogs. The purpose of the poster is to highlight the many environmentally positive aspects of golf and golf courses for not only golfers, but also other golf course staff members. PACE, a membership organization that provides breaking research news, information and expert advice, said in their release, "Earth Day provides a great opportunity for you to highlight your conservation and recycling efforts and to encourage the public to join in the effort to keep our planet healthy and clean"
As I said above, if your company, golf course or organization has any Earth Day related activities under way today, let us know about them. In a few hours, we'll let you know about some of the things taking place today at GCSAA World HQ in Lawrence, then highlight some of the ways superintendents are currently contributing to the effort.
ADDED 4.22.11, 3:35 p.m. — The Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. got into the Earth Day act by announcing their support for a major central Ohio community gardens program. Headquartered in that part of the country, the company will supports an effort through The Columbus Foundation which will establish a grant program to support existing community gardnes and encourage the creation of new ones.
The company has its own offering in this category at its headquarters in Marysville, Ohio, a 7-acre living classroom for horticulture, environmental education and community gardening best practices called the Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. Community Garden.
