We received some sad news earlier this month concerning one of the finalists for our 2011 Most Valuable Technician award, which we present along with the folks from Foley United. Gary McBride, who was the equipment technician at Daniel Island Club in Charleston, S.C., and one of the three finalists for this year's award, died in his sleep after suffering a heart attack. He was 51 years old.
Michael Fabrizio, CGCS, the director of grounds and golf maintenance at Daniel Island Club who nominated McBride for the MVT award, told me, "He was an important part of our family here at Daniel Island for over 11 years, and a good friend of mine for 20 years." The entire maintenance operation at Daniel Island shut down on the day of McBride's funeral so everyone would have the opportunity to attend the service.
You can read an online obituary for McBride here. On behalf of the magazine, GCSAA and Foley United, our thoughts are with McBride's family and friends at this difficult time.
