Ah, sweet revenge.
The Carolinas GCSA defeated the Virginia GCSA by the score of 9.5 to 6.5 in the second annual Virlina Cup that is presented by both associations in partnership with Syngenta Professional Products. The event, which took place Monday and Tuesday at South Carolina courses Chechessee Creek Club and Secession Golf Club, is a similar format to The Ryder Cup Matches.
Virginia GCSA won the inaugural event in 2010 by the count of 10-6. No repeat, however. Carolinas GCSA led 2.5 to 1.5 following the four-ball matches and kept a grip on its advantage for the remainder of the event, which was played at times in heavy rain and wind gusts up to 40 mph. The foursome matches ended in a 2-2 tie, and Carolinas GCSA prevailed in the singles matches 5-3.
Five of the top performers for Carolinas GCSA were Troy Thrall (Charwood GC, West Columbia, S.C.); O'Neil Crouch (Old Town Club, Winston-Salem, N.C.); Jim Knaffle, CGCS (International Club of Myrtle Beach, S.C.); Steve Agazzi (Turtle Point GC, Kiawah, S.C.); and Matt Davis (Boscobel GC, Pendleton, S.C.).
"This event has already become one of the highlights of the annual calendar for members of both associations, and we're very grateful for Syngenta's support in helping make it happen," Carolinas GCSA Executive Director Tim Kreger said in a prepared statement. "Of course the golf is a lot of fun, but it's the rare chance it provides to build business relationships and networks in a social setting that is so valuable."
Each team consists of eight players, who made the team in a qualifier event. Kreger served as captain for Carolinas GCSA. Eric Spurlock of Hermitage CC in Richmond, Va., was captain for Virginia GCSA.
