Here’s another update from our man inside the golf course management operations at TPC Sawgrass for this week’s Players Championship — Peter White, a UMass student from the school’s winning team during the 2013 GCSAA Collegiate Turf Bowl competition, which is presented in partnership with John Deere Golf:
We learned from Tim Barger, a long time crewmember here at TPC Sawgrass, that they will be tearing up the fairways to replace the current bermudagrass cultivar because it is mutating and no longer looks uniform. Being from the North, we had never heard of this and it was really cool to see something so rare. We were also surprised to learn that they own all their cutting equipment, and that the only thing they bring in extra for the tournament are the carts.
Things changed a bit this morning since it’s Thursday and it was the first real day of set-up. The team really felt the pressure to perform, so we had to have our A game. The bunker crew had its best day yet and we were able to finish before 8 a.m. The rest of the crew was on point and the course is in great shape for the first day of play.
During the practice rounds we received numerous compliments and thanks from the pros (Ian Poulter, Matt Kuchar, Davis Love III). It was really nice to know that they appreciated the hard work that went into transforming the course during the week.
