Dennis Lyon, CGCS, has racked up plenty of honors over his long career in golf course management.
GCSAA's president in 1989, Lyon won the association's Col. John Morley Distinguished Service Award in 2013. He was the winner of the USGA Green Section Award in 2011. In 2005, he was inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame.
Last month, Lyon added yet another honor to his growing collection, one that he says ranks right up there with the other recognition he has received over the years. At a gala celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Colorado Golf Association, Lyon was selected as the "Golf Course Superintendent of the Century," joining five other Rocky Mountain golf luminaries who were honored for their various roles in the game in the state.
"I was very excited and humbled," Lyon said in an email to GCM. "I felt it was an opportunity to 'carry the flag' for the golf course superintendent and give some recognition to superintendents and all of their contributions to the success and enjoyment of the game by millions of golfers over the past 100 years here in Colorado."
Lyon, a 42-year member of GCSAA who oversaw golf operations for the city of Aurora, Colo, for more than three decades before retiring, was joined in the state's honor rolls by Hale Irwin (male player of the century), Barbara McIntire (female player of the century), Charles "Vic" Kline (golf professional of the century), Will F. Nicholson Jr. (man of the century) and Judy Bell (woman of the century). The gala also featured golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who discussed his career in the game with Golf Channel's Tim Rosaforte.
