Before they got down to business this morning at the Syngenta Business Institute, superintendents opened up about their personal business.
Such as: John Cunningham from Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis is a snowboarder. Bill Keene from Blacksburg (Va.) Country Club loves to cook. Joe Lucas from Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., notes that his family has possessed New York Giants season tickets for 54 years.
These icebreaker moments set the table for the launch of the seventh annual Syngenta Business Institute inside Graylan Conference Center in the shadows of Wake Forest University. From their seats, each superintendent went around the room and informed one another about their club, their job, and a fun fact about themselves. The latter certainly provided enlightening and lighthearted moments.
Andrew Wilson from Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y., earned an English degree before he changed directions professionally. Chad Mark from Kirtland Country Club in Willoughby, Ohio, serves as an assistant basketball coach. Dave Smith from Fawn Lake Country Club in Spotsylvania, Va., is proud to say he has season tickets to see his No. 1-ranked Clemson football team even though it's an eight-hour drive.
The fun fact that may have drawn the biggest laughs, though, came straight from hair-free Paul Latshaw of Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, site of the Jack Nicklaus-hosted Memorial.
"I had a full head of hair before I went to Muirfield," Latshaw said.
