Mike "Red" Graves is a lot less red now.
Graves, assistant superintendent at Hazeltine National Golf Club, donated nearly 14 inches of his red hair today for a worthwhile cause (above is the new look; below is the old look). He took time out from his preparation for the Ryder Cup to cut his hair for Wigs for Kids, a nonprofit organization that provides hair replacement for children who have lost hair due to chemotherapy, radiation, and other medical issues.
"The whole point of this is so some kid can have hair again," Graves said following the haircut in the maintenance facility area that he received from Great Clips stylist James Fruehling, who does not recall cutting somebody's hair with this big of a crowd watching. A few dozen of Hazeltine National's grounds staff and others looked on. One of them even suggested using a lawnmower for the job. Another thought a weedeater could be a possible option.
The simple fact that Graves did this is no surprise at all to his mother Anita Ward.
"He's just a good kid," says Ward, noting that Mike plays flag football with her younger son, Paul, who has special needs.
Graves says it is his mother who serves as his role model.
"She is compassionate. Very nice. Generous. I am her," he says.
Now the question is whether Graves will grow out his hair again. He served up one possibility.
"I think I'll do a faux hawk," he says.
